About Us
Ginikanwanyi means “What is greater than woman”, it is a question but also an open challenge for anyone to share what is they know that is better or more powerful that a woman. We are a feminist initiative and gender advocacy organisation in Igboland, working to correct the distortion of Igbo women’s history through the radical education of the Igbo girl, in order to help her reclaim her agency and identity.
At the core, Ginikanwanyi exists to remind every Igbo girl that she comes from a line of proud, hardworking women, powerful women who built economies, established traditions and shaped communities. The extent of the historical Igbo woman’s agency has greatly been diminished through patriarchal retellings of Igbo history, colonial prejudice and religious conditioning. Ginikanwanyi intends to arm Igbo girls with real and accurate accounts of the history of the women before them.
What We Do
Ginikanwanyi focuses on educational transformation and cultural awakening, especially in Eastern Nigeria. We work primarily through:
-
- Feminist outreaches in secondary schools
To teach the girls the true stories of Igbo women who came before them. Through this initiative, we will reach hundreds and even thousands of girls with carefully curated messages that affirm their worth and expand their imagination.
- Feminist outreaches in secondary schools
-
- Ginikanwanyi Feminist Advocacy Clubs
These will be established in schools to keep the conversation going beyond one-time outreach events. The clubs will provide a space for girls to learn about their history, speak freely about the pressures they face and also receive mentorship from the feminist women in our community. The clubs will host workshops, cultural immersion activities and community development projects that allow girls to actively participate in shaping their future.

-
- Community storytelling projects
Archiving oral histories, bursting myths and sharing real-life testimonies from women across Igbo communities to preserve and platform intergenerational wisdom. The goal is to nurture young Igbo girls into confident, history-conscious leaders who will boldly ask questions and courageously challenge falsehoods.

Why We are Here
The modern Igbo girl is growing up with a fractured view of herself, being told that docility is virtuous, that her foremothers were fully submissive and that equality is foreign to our tradition. Our work is to reconnect her with the truth and emphasise the egalitarian nature of the Igbo society which ensured that Igbo women were as powerful, vocal and proud as the men.
Our Reach
While our work begins in Igboland and focuses on the girls there, Ginikanwanyi speaks to a global Igbo audience. Whether you are in Nnewi, Nsukka, Owerri, Lagos, Kaduna, Chicago or London, this movement is for you. We believe our work begins at home but its impact can echo across borders.
Our Mission
To restore, protect and amplify the rich cultural legacy of Igbo womanhood by re-educating the Igbo girl, challenging distorted narratives and fostering feminist consciousness based on history, truth and pride in our cultural heritage.
Our Vision
A generation of Igbo girls who grow up knowing their worth, their history and their right to live freely, carrying forward the bold, brilliant legacy of the women who came before them.
