I Am My Own Person : A Rallying Cry for the Initiation of Baby Feminists

In April 2012, I had just turned twelve and was in my second year of Junior Secondary School at a private, Catholic missionary school in Onitsha. One morning, a group of young women arrived at our school; they were warm, confident, and elegantly dressed in smart-casual outfits, branded T-shirts, jeans and pairs of white sneakers. They said they were from an organisation that was fighting to combat period poverty and misinformation. They spoke to us about menstruation; what really happens in the body, why it hurts, how to wear a pad, how to dispose of it, and how to stay safe and healthy while menstruating. Many of us hadn’t even started our periods yet, but we listened attentively and watched their demonstrations keenly. I was completely fascinated, I had read so much about periods by then and was certain I knew all about it, but they were a treasure trove of information I had never heard even heard of. I remember the quiet awe in the room and how the ladies made us feel seen and important……
